The Dancing Links Pointer Identity
In a doubly linked list, removing a node $x$ takes two assignments:
x.L.R = x.R;
x.R.L = x.L;Because $x$'s own pointers x.L and x.R still point to its former neighbors in the exact state when $x$ was unlinked, putting $x$ back requires no search and no memory allocation:
x.L.R = x;
x.R.L = x;Algorithm X & The MRV (S-Heuristic) Branching Rule
Given a binary matrix $M$, the Exact Cover problem asks for a subset of rows that has exactly one $1$ in every column (the core formulation of Sudoku, N-Queens, Pentomino tiling, and hypergraph partitioning).
By always branching on the column $c$ with the fewest remaining $1$s (col.size), dead-end branches (col.size === 0) are detected immediately in $O(1)$ without recursing, shrinking the backtracking tree by orders of magnitude.

Guided Implementation Walkthrough (4 Progressive Steps)
Step 1: Toroidal 4-Way Doubly-Linked Matrix Construction
- Core Mechanical Concept: Toroidal 4-Way Doubly-Linked Matrix Construction
- Target Module:
index.js(Step1) - Engineering Specification: Link column headers horizontally with
this.header, and for each row link its 1-nodes both vertically into their respective columns and horizontally into a row ring. - Verification Invariant: verifies Step 1: Toroidal 4-Way Doubly-Linked Matrix Construction
Step 2: Reversible Pointer Surgery (cover & uncover)
- Core Mechanical Concept: Reversible Pointer Surgery (cover & uncover)
- Target Module:
index.js(Step2) - Engineering Specification: Implement
cover(col)to removecoland all conflicting rows, anduncover(col)in exact reverse order (UthenL) usingj.D.U = j; j.U.D = jto restore every pointer without allocation. - Verification Invariant: verifies Step 2: Reversible Pointer Surgery (cover & uncover)
Step 3: S-Heuristic (Minimum Remaining Values)
- Core Mechanical Concept: S-Heuristic (Minimum Remaining Values)
- Target Module:
index.js(Step3) - Engineering Specification: Implement
_chooseMinColumn()to pick the uncovered column with the smallestcol.size, minimizing the branching factor at every tree depth. - Verification Invariant: verifies Step 3: S-Heuristic (Minimum Remaining Values)
Step 4: Algorithm X Recursive Search
- Core Mechanical Concept: Algorithm X Recursive Search
- Target Module:
index.js(Step4) - Engineering Specification: When
this.header.R === this.header, all columns are covered—record the solution! Otherwise cover the minimum column, try each row, cover its columns, recurse, and uncover in reverse. - Verification Invariant: verifies Step 4: Algorithm X Recursive Search
